UNICEF and the Ministry of Social Policy launch a multi-purpose cash programme to support the immediate needs of 52,000 households, as conflict rages across the country.
LVIV, 31 March 2022 – A new cash transfer programme launched today will provide UAH 2,220 (US$74) per person in 52,000 households struggling to provide for their children. The cash assistance targets households with three or more children, including at least one child under 2-years, as well as families with two or more children, with one living with a disability.
“This horrific conflict has devastated children’s lives and families are not only trying to stay alive but also struggling to provide for the essential needs of their children,” said Murat Sahin, UNICEF Ukraine Representative. “This cash support will at least give some buffer and relief but much more needs to be done,” he added.
The additional financial support complements existing state programmes that existed before the war and those that have been set up since hostilities started, such as for internally displaced people.
Evidence shows that cash transfers are an effective response to meet children’s immediate needs. In the long term, cash transfers can build households’ resilience, strengthening their ability to better cope with shocks.
This is the first phase of the programme and UNICEF aims to extend the coverage to reach more children and families depending on funding availability.
To access the grant, families can register online and UNICEF has also established a hotline “Spilno” to provide additional information and help with the registration process.
